Was entspricht dem linguistischen Phänomen der Negation in der Welt? Der Ausgangspunkt, der mir geeignet scheint, um diese Frage zu beantworten, ist das so genannte Problem der negativen singulären Existenzsätze. Dieses Problem besteht darin, dass aus einem Satz, der die Existenz irgendeines Gegenstandes verneint, unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen zu folgen scheint, dass dieser Gegenstand existiert. Das Problem der negativen singulären Existenzsätze scheint wesentlich mit der Frage verknüpft zu sein, ob Existenz ein logisches Prädikat ist oder nicht. Lässt man diese Frage offen, (...) kann man zu einer Lösung des Problems der negativen singulären Existenzsätze kommen, nach welcher die Negation in einer ungewöhnlichen Weise zu interpretieren ist. Es wird sich dabei zeigen, dass die Negation einerseits als Satznegation und andererseits als Teil der Metasprache anzusehen ist. (shrink)

Wenn Physiker davon sprechen, dass sich unsere Sonne eines entfernten Tages in einen roten Riesen und noch viel später in einen weißen Zwerg verwandeln wird, oder davon, dass sich Elementarteilchen auf allen möglichen Wegen gleichzeitig von einem Punkt A zu einem Punkt B bewegen, kommt man schwerlich umhin, nach der Quintessenz dieser und ähnlicher Aussagen zu fragen. Auch wenn Psychologen leger erklären, dass Erinnerungen im Gehirn gespeichert werden, so möchte man wissen, was gemeint ist. Eine erste und natürlich erscheinende Möglichkeit (...) bestünde darin, diese Aussagen wörtlich zu verstehen, womit sich eine ganze Reihe an weiterführenden Fragen ergeben würde: Wie kann es sein, dass sich bestimmte Gegenstände zur selben Zeit an zwei verschiedenen Orten aufhalten? Können Informationen auf biologischem Material gespeichert werden werden wie Mais in einem Speicher oder wie Daten auf einer Festplatte? Die zweite Möglichkeit, die mir viel mehr zu versprechen scheint, besteht darin, danach zu suchen, was Physiker oder Psychologen eigentlich sagen wollen, ihnen also gewissermaßen zu unterstellen, dass sie sich in vereinfachender und irreführender Weise ausdrücken. Damit entsteht konkret die Aufgabe, zu erklären, wie die zuvor genannten Sätze interpretiert werden können. Ich möchte vorschlagen, die genannten Aussagen metaphorisch zu verstehen. Physiker sprechen zwar nicht von der Schwarzes-Loch-Metapher und auch Chemiker sprechen nicht von der Kohlenwasserstoffketten-Metapher, doch immerhin sprechen Psychologen von der Computer-Metapher. Auch in der Wissenschaftstheorie wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass einige naturwissenschaftliche Beschreibungen metaphorisch zu verstehen sind. Diese Metaphern spielen sowohl bei der Entstehung von Theorien als auch bei ihrer Verbreitung eine wichtige Rolle. Ausgangspunkt einer Diskussion kann die Tatsache sein, dass natürliche Sprache mit metaphorischen Ausdrücken durchsetzt ist, eine ausschließlich wörtliche Redeweise wäre kaum vorstellbar; und wir verstehen die metaphorische Ausdrucksweise im Allgemeinen. Daran anknüpfen muss man sich die Frage stellen, warum wir Metaphern auch bei der Formulierung von wissenschaftlichen Theorien verwenden. Leistet die Metapher einen Beitrag zum Erkenntnisprozess, der durch eine vorwiegend wörtliche Ausdrucksweise nicht oder nur mit erheblich größerem Aufwand erreicht werden könnte? Warum nimmt die Metapher bei der Formulierung wissenschaftlicher Theorien eine zentrale Stellung ein? Ein zweiter Blick macht sichtbar, dass in wissenschaftlichen Theorien zwei Arten von Metaphern verwendet werden: theoriekonstituierenden Metaphern und nicht-theoriekonstituierenden Metaphern. Eine nicht-theoriekonstituierende Metapher kann vollständig eliminiert werden, d. h. das, was durch die Metapher zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, kann auch wörtlich gesagt werden. Wenn jemand von Kraftfeldern spricht, so denkt er dabei an Dinge, die mit Maisfeldern nur eine entfernte Ähnlichkeit aufweisen. Die Metapher dient dazu, die Theorie anschaulich vorstellbar zu machen. Auf eine theoriekonstituierende Metapher kann nicht verzichtet werden, sie ist ein integrativer Bestandteil einer wissenschaftlichen Theorie. Der Kerngedanke der Computer-Metapher, nämlich dass das menschliche Gehirn ein informationsverarbeitender Mechanismus ist, kann nicht in wörtlicher Weise formuliert werden. In beiden Fällen scheint es mir gerechtfertigt zu sein, von erkenntnisleitenden Metaphern zu sprechen. Nicht-theoriekonstituierende Metaphern sind erkenntnisleitend, da sie einen überblicksartigen und schnellen Zugang zu einem neuen Gegenstandsbereich bieten. Theoriekonstituierende Metaphern sind in einem viel stärkeren Sinn erkenntnisleitend, sie der Ausgangspunkt der wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis. (shrink)

Friedrich Georg Jungers grosser Essay Die Perfektion der Technik - 1939 geschrieben, 1946 erstmals veroffentlicht - ist ein Klassiker der Kulturkritik, der die moderne Debatte um Okologie und Nachhaltigkeit jenseits aller Ideologien vorweggenommen hat. Mit Recht wurde Jungers Buch epochalen Werken wie der "Dialektik der Aufklarung" von Horkheimer/Adorno sowie der "Antiquiertheit des Menschen" von Gunther Anders gleichrangig zur Seite gestellt. Junger's book was rightly granted equal status with other contemporaneous work of considerable influence, such as the "Dialektik der Aufklarung" ("The Dialectics of Enlightenment") by Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Innerhalb des Gedankenexperiments eines natürlichen Zustandes bewegt sich Meier in der für seine Zeit üblichen Weise der Grundlegung einer Naturrechtslehre mit der Suche nach dem obersten Prinzip, aus dem alle weiteren Grundsätze und Regeln abzuleiten sind. Berücksichtigt man die naturrechtliche Tradition von Christian Wolff und Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, in die sich Meier mehrfach ausdrücklich stellt, würde man nun hier das Gebot des Strebens nach Vollkommenheit erwarten. Doch überraschenderweise legt Meier seinem Recht der Natur ein anderes Prinzip zu Grunde, nämlich: „beleidige (...) niemanden äusserlich in dem natürlichen Zustande.“ Sämtliche natürlichen Rechte und Pflichten des Menschen im Naturzustand folgen für Meier aus diesem ersten Grundsatz, der nun weniger an das Vollkommenheitsgebot des Christian Wolff erinnert als vielmehr eine systematische Parallele zu dem Bereich der für den äußeren Frieden förderlichen Handlungen des justum von Christian Thomasius aufweist, dessen Regel „Behindere andere nicht in der Ausübung ihrer Rechte“ aus den Fundamenta juris naturae et gentium dem Meierschen, „keinem andern Menschen das Seine“ zu nehmen, entspricht. Within the thought-experiment of a natural condition, Meier follows the usual method of his age by basing a doctrine of natural law on the search for a highest principle from which all further principles and rules are to be derived. Considering the tradition of Christian Wolff’s and Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten in defining natural law, a tradition in which Meier several times expressly places himself, we would expect to find here the commandment to strive for perfection. But, surprisingly, Meier bases his natural law on a different principle: “offend no-one outwardly in the natural condition.” For Meier, all natural laws and duties of mankind in the natural condition follow from this first principle, which now seems less an echo of Christian Wolff’s precept of perfection than a systematic parallel to the sphere of actions required four outward oeace, the justum of Christian Thomasius, whose rule of “Do not hinder others in the exercise of their rights,” from the Fundamenta juris naturae et gentium correspondes to Meier’s rule not to take “from any other man what is his.”. Among the most influential parts of the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831) were his ethics, his theory of the state, and his philosophy of history. The Philosophy of Right (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts) (1821), the last work published in Hegel's lifetime, is a combined system of moral and political philosophy, or a sociology dominated by the idea of the state.
